This beginner-friendly multi-generational class is perfect for families, kids, parents, and first-time anglers. No experience is required, and fly rods are available if you need one. We’ll teach you the essential skills needed to start fly fishing on Montana rivers while spending a day outside learning and practicing together. Fly fishing is a life long joy of ours and should be shared with others.
The class begins with morning instruction covering fly fishing basics and equipment, followed by afternoon hands-on river practice where you’ll wade into the water and learn to cast, drift flies, and find fish with the help of experienced local guides.
By the end of the day, you’ll understand the fundamentals needed to start fly fishing on your own in the Missoula area and throughout Montana. No experience needed — learn to cast, read the river, and catch your first trout. Warning: fly fishing can become habit forming!!

Our 7/8-hour beginner fly fishing clinic in Missoula is designed to build confidence, teach practical skills, and introduce you to one of Montana’s favorite outdoor traditions.
Whether you’re completely new to fishing or just curious about fly fishing, this class will help you:
- Make your first successful fly cast
- Understand how fly rods and gear work
- Learn where trout live in Montana rivers
- Practice fishing in moving water
- Gain the confidence to plan your own fishing outings
The class is taught by Adventure Missoula owner Jared Forsythe and guide assistants, experienced local anglers who love introducing new people to fly fishing in Western Montana.
To provide plenty of individual instruction, class size is limited to 5–10 participants.
What You’ll Learn
Morning Session – Fly Fishing Basics
The morning portion of this Missoula fly fishing class includes both indoor and outdoor instruction covering:
- Fly fishing gear and equipment
- Choosing the right fly rod for Montana rivers
- How to rig a fly rod
- Essential fishing knots
- Trout species found in Missoula rivers
- When and where to fish locally
- Fly fishing terminology
- Types of flies and when to use them
- Basic casting techniques
- Line mending and drift control
Afternoon Session – River Practice
In the afternoon, participants head to the river for live wade fishing practice with instructors.
You’ll learn:
- How to safely wade a river
- Where trout typically hold in moving water
- Casting in real river conditions
- Managing line and gear while fishing
- Untangling fly line
- Handling fish responsibly and practicing “keep ’em wet” etiquette
This hands-on practice is where everything starts to click.
What to Bring
Participants should bring:
- Lunch and drinks for the day
- Any fly fishing gear you already own
- Notebook and pen
- Montana fishing license
- Footwear that can get wet (wading boots, water sandals, or old sneakers)
- Rain jacket and weather layers
Fly rods will be provided for participants who do not have one. Please indicate during registration if you need equipment.

Class location is approximately 20 minutes outside Missoula, with the exact meeting location provided after registration.
Please be sure you can attend before registering. Refunds/reschedules will only be given if weather or water conditions prohibit the class from running at instructor discretion. Refunds will not be available for cancellations or no shows.
